________
We emphasize first that several films caught our attention for the quality and diversity of proposals. However, one in particular summoned us for this award due to a combination of factors. For the sensitive way in which it treated gender and sexuality in its very language, creatively investing in the infinite faces of a young woman as she produces her subjectivity. Debating the impositions of a tradition that constrains the circulation of a female body in the Middle East while also managing to reflect analogous situations experienced by a Western society audience. Using social media material in tension with a private digital universe, thus engendering an aesthetic structure that constantly devours itself and returns to the collective duration of the movie theater what would be a fleeting and individualizing portrait in a phone device. Finally, we bestow the award for Best Short Film of the International Competition to “Love & Revenge”, by Anhar Salem, for its keen attention to the contemporary, more precisely in the realistic and artificial way it expresses the dilemmas of the present time.

________

________
How much speech inhabits silence? How much advance is contained in the gesture of stopping? How many times can fit in a few minutes?
In this potent set of films gathered in this year's Minas Competition, something seems to persist: the search for something that makes us pick up the pieces left by two long years of mourning and seclusion. In the 12 films gathered here, we go through backyards, bathrooms, ravines, soccer fields, corners, kitchens and bars – spaces of memory, affection and resistance that constantly remind us of existences that persist, restless, despite everything.
In the difficult resumption of community life (or of life itself) there seems to be a desire to follow in the images – even if, in order to follow, we need to stop time, listen to the silence, observe the details, bring back the past and land. in this uncertain present time. Together
And what images make us come together? What filmic practices give us the possibility to weave communities, to strengthen ourselves in affection and to collectively elaborate other ways of telling the world what, more than ever, is stuck in our throats?
Cinema has the ability to communicate, objectively and/or subjectively through images, which the verb does not always express. Therefore, the choice of the jury for the prize of the Minas show – and also for an honorable mention – was made in the face of the power of communication of black youth, who articulate insubordinate languages and capable of saying a lot, with very little from their ravines. The film that we chose to take the prize at the show tells us a lot through silence, in a very short space of time, as it invades life and becomes life in its pictures and expressions, with the action of the community inside and outside the screens. For us, RACHOCRACIA, by Artur Ranne, made his run and knew how to exist despite the rules.
If, as Artur Ranne taught us, the advantage will always be whoever dictates the rules, RACHOCRACIA shows us that for those on the run, the power of culture and life is precisely in the gesture of breaking them. Breaking the sovereignty of speech with just one look, breaking the progression of haste with a pause, breaking fiction with the rawness of reality, breaking the individuality of authorship with the collective voice of the community.
And when the community expresses itself through the image, the cinema becomes a meeting space, a practice of care. Something that we so kindly learned from the film-project CONTRA-MONUMENTO CENA #1, by the collective Olhares (Im)possíveis, worthy of an honorable mention for the potency of its inventiveness. His undisciplined images, which also defy the rules, do not hide the contradictions of reality. On the contrary, they open them up, strain their limits, and turn them into provocation.
RACHOCRACIA and COUNTER-MONUMENT SCENE #1, thank you for reminding us that, for those who are on the run, all silence is speech, all broken is the world, every minute counts, and every life matters.
