• THE FESTIVAL •
FestCurtasBH – Belo Horizonte International Short Film Festival has been in a steady and vigorous pace for over 20 editions. The successive editions draw no linear path, nor mean to: the multiplicity of associates, films and configurations over time play an important role in holding up the Festival, which was created in 1994, pausing during five years between the second and third editions. The invisible thread that stitches its history is the unwavering bet in the potentially implicit strength and liberty of the short film in its distinctive cinema condition. Open to all genres and formats, FestCurtasBH is particularly keen on avant-garde and experimental film, as well as on politically engaged and inventive cinematic forms. Furthermore, the Festival embraces its research component and has been devoting part of its programming to reflect upon the history of cinema, revolving some of its lines of force as well as its aesthetical and political operations, such as the legitimation, obliteration and resurfacing of oeuvres, filmmakers and procedures.
Besides the exhibition of contemporary (eligible for a number of Capybara awards) and historical films, FestCurtasBH presents seminars, round tables, workshops, special events and, once each edition comes to its end, an itinerant programme screened in over 30 cities and towns of the Minas Gerais state. The catalogue published each year inscribes the Festival memory and acts, moreover, as an extension and deepening of the reflections proposed by each edition by means of previously unpublished texts (or of limited circulation), translations, facsimiles and other archival material.
