UNDER THE WHITE MASK: THE FILM THAT HAESAERTS COULD HAVE MADE

What would the African masks filmed by the Belgian Paul Haesaerts say if, instead of feeding the vanity of a colonial elite, they were seen as subjects? The answer to the historical objectification of non-European peoples arises from the very re-articulation of fragments of the 1958 documentary on Congolese art. The masks, which appeared objectified, now intone, in Lingala, Aimé Césaire's discourse on colonialism; critical – and still current – discourse for Europe.

A means of communication, an instrument, a possibility in the impossibility: a bag is not a simple accessory in Iranian cinema. Using excerpts from films released between 1990 and 2018, Maryam Tafakory's film essay proposes to investigate the senses, symbolisms, and meanings that permeate and reformulate the uses of this conventional object.

Cutting chayote, threshing corn, remembering an old story. Lucas Tétry-Rivière's first film takes us into the house of his maternal grandmother, Reine Tétry. In that place, feeling the wind of the city of Bras-Panon (eastern Indian Ocean) is more than contemplating a phenomenon of nature: it becomes a metaphor and an invitation to imagine and revere the presence of people in his family who are no longer in life.

Said without any sentimental inflection, sentences like this one populate this unique film, which covers the last twenty years of a man who takes stock of his existence. With each new ellipse, this family diary opens to unexpected and touching transformations and questions the meanings we attribute to our lives.
